2ndInternational Conference on Spiritualityand Social Work with focus on Enhancing Commitment for Just, Inclusive and Sustainable Societiesis jointly organised by CSRD Institute of Social Work and Research and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair and StudiesCentre, University of Pune during January 3 and 5, 2013. It commenced with inauguration at the hands of Dr. W N Wade, Vice Chancellor of Pune University. Dr. N M Aston, President of BPHE Society welcomed the signatories and the delegates.Mr. Minar Pimple from UN Millennium Development Campaign delivered the keynote address. The inaugural session was also addressed by Prof Raosaheb Kasbe, chair professor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair & Studies Centre and Dr. Connie Gates from USA.The proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Spirituality and Social Work held in December 2012 was printed and released in the form of a book titled “Lifting up the spirit, Uplifting the Body”. Director of CSRD ISWR, Dr Suresh Pathare set the context of the conference and Dr Vijay Khare delivered the vote of thanks. The inauguration was followed by a lively cultural programme presenting the social and cultural life of rural Maharashtra.
The second day on January 04, 2013 commenced with the first Plenary Session was chaired by Prof. Sanjay Bhatt from Delhi School of Social Work. Prof. Gracious Thomas spoke on “Relevance of spirituality and religious values to social work philosophy and practice”He highlighted the philanthropic and service perspective under Hinduism, Islam, Shikisiam, Buddhism, and Christianity and related the same with social work values. Dr. Shobha Arole presented on “Spiritual aspect of health and healing” focusing on equality, integration, alternative health care for the rural poor. Then Robin Reve addressed the participants on “Spirituality and social work linkages” with an aim towards creating a new humanitarian society balancing vibration needs to create inner energy. Minar Pimple spoke about the “Millennium Development Goals”. He expressed concern about power politics affecting the country’s development.
The 1stTechnical SessionwasChaired by Dr. P M Vasave from College of Social Work, Dhule. Prof Swapan Garainpresented on “Faith based social work interventions”. The central theme was place of practicing professional social work in faith based organisations and NGOs. The paper concluded with a discussion on Global vs. Indian perspectives of Sampathiorientation of individuals vis-a-vis Samparadhan preached by FBOs and NGOs for public good. Dr. Meera Kulkarni spoke on “Mind in the quest for spirituality” and dealt with Positive Psychology for improving one’s life by changing one’s subjective experiences. She tool us around Civic virtues, Self- Approval, Self love, Inner self talk, and Creating Deep and Lasting happiness. Prof.Vishnu Ghadekaraddressed the audience on “Human Rights and Right to education for Social Justice and inclusive practices”. Mr. Prashant Chaudhary enlightened on the teachings of buddhisim for dealing with unhappiness and human wants and desire for attaining right livelihood, right concentration.
There were two parallel sessions. One session was chaired by Prof Gandhi Mati and Dr. M Arif on “Ecology and Spirituality: The Spiritual Dimension of Sustainability in the light of Qur’an” , Dr. Pradip Muttukele on “Ralegan Siddhi: A case study for social and sustainable change in drought prone rural Indian Society”,Mr. Pratap Chandra Behra on “LokasamGraha and Contemporary Ecological Crisis” and Dr Jagdish Jadavon “Ecology and Spirituality: A Retrospection to Enhance Commitment for More Inclusive “presented papers in the broad theme of ecology, spirituality and sustainable development.
The second parallel session was chaired by Dr. Robin Reves. Mr. David Boweling on “Spirituality and Social Work Practice” and Mrs. Vijay Lakshmi Nandapurkar on “Moral and Spiritual Values in Education” presented papers.
The post lunch second Plenary Session was chaired by Prof. Pias Moarus. Fr. Nelson presented on “World Religion and Socio-Cosmic Harmony”. Drawing from Raja Ram Mohan Roy, he concluded that all religions were based on horizontal in structure but all of them trace vertical future, for a just, inclusive society. Prof Sanjay Bhatt addressed on the moral and spiritual values in education. He said, one must be spiritual or one must be religious; – one can’t say that I am both. We created religion to maintain the social order in the name of God, but in spirituality there is no God.
Post plenary Session, three parallel sessions were held. Prof. K K Kanoja from CSRD chaired on session wherein Mr. Prakash Yadav presented a paper on “Social Justice for inclusive growth and development” (2) Dr. Jaimon Varghese addressed on “Spirituality Sensitive social work practice : A National study of Professional Social Workers in India” concluding that 80% students are aware about spirituality and many of them practice the spirituality in their field work; (3) Dr. Sudha Kankaria spoke on “Save for girl child, role of spirituality, social justice”.
The other parallel session was chaired by Fr Nelson Falcav. The paper presenters were Mr Prakash S Patil & Mrs Snhal J Divekar on “Spiritulity,Health, Healing and their Connectivity”, Mr Suresh Mugatmal on Mugatmal “Budhist Spirituality and Health” and Mr Vijaykumar Kadam on“DisAbility: Perspective and statistics”
The third parallel session was chaired by Prof.(Mrs.) MandaWagh. There were two paper presenters were Linda Therese Luizon “Healing and Hallelujah: The Contribution of a Retreat Centre to Public Health” and Prof Pius Moras on “Spirituality in Professional Life)”.
The day ended with a workshop on meditation by Dr. Mrs. S R Dshmukh.
On 3rd Day, the day began with screening a documentary on the life of Mother Teresa. the plenary was Chaired by Mr. Bendelu. Presenters were Rev. Dr. Joseph Kavalakkat, Fr. Kuruvillia and Dr. Neela Onawale.
First parallel session was chaired by Dr. Ramesh pathare. Presenters Dr. Channaveer R M on “Satyhagraha :A Philosophy for Social Action” Prof. K KKanojiaon “Swami Vivekanand And Today’s India”andDr. GhanashyamYelneon “Spirituality and Rural Reconstruction: Ideals and Ideas of RashtrasanthTukdojiMaharaj”
Second Parallel session was chaired by Dr. VasantBarve, Dr. MangalPansare on “The role of moral and spiritual values in education for enhancing commitment to inclusive and sustainable soceities with reference to Manashakti”, Dr. A. S. Raju with GirishHiradeon “Freedom Of Religion, Secularism Vis-À-Vis Uniform Civil Code And Social Harmony: The Role Of Judiciary In Indian Context” and Mr. Atul More on “Religion, Morality And Law – In The Perspective Of Buddhism”.
The rapporteurs were SudhirMashke, DayaWagmare, Shiva BasavanaChalwadi, RatnadeepGaikwad, SushantPaikwao, TusharGade.
In total there were 11 sessions and 34 scholarly papers were presented.
